Electrical Engineer II

The Electrical Engineer II is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of electrical systems for existing and future HCI Energy products. This role will work closely with a team of engineers, sales personnel, and installers to ensure reliable and efficient control system performance. The position requires a strong background in electrical design with a specific focus on AC & DC power, controls, automation, and instrumentation. The engineer will be expected to develop control panel layouts, write control system documentation, and program PLCs and HMIs.
This position reports to the Senior Electrical Engineer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and develop electrical systems, including panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
- Program, test, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and related automation systems.
- Develop and maintain control narratives, I/O lists, and detailed functional specifications.
- Works with other engineers, designers, and drafters in the production of drawing packages providing detailed electrical designs for single line diagrams, power plans, power studies, lighting plans, grounding, junction box layouts and wiring diagrams, conduit and cable schedules, panel schedules, and installation details using company standards and drafting techniques.
- Ensure designs meet applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and engineering best practices.
- Review and redline construction and manufacturing packages, ensuring technical accuracy and clarity.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support system integration, testing, and commissioning.
- Conduct power and control system troubleshooting, diagnostics, and field support as needed.
- Participate in the design and implementation of SCADA, remote monitoring, or telemetry systems if applicable.
- Maintain documentation of system configurations, revisions, and updates throughout the product lifecycle.
- Assist with product development by integrating strategies that support new features or performance improvements.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in electrical engineering or a closely related role.
- Experience with control panel design, PLC/HMI programming, and system troubleshooting required.
- Familiarity with industrial automation and instrumentation systems.
- Experience in energy systems (e.g., Renewable Energy, UPS, BESS) is strongly preferred but not required.
- Experience in Electrical Manufacturing Design is preferred.
- Electrical systems design experience with the following software is preferred:
- Visual Lighting Design Software
- ETAP Power Analysis
- SKM
- AutoCAD
- Bluebeam Revu
- Thorough knowledge of engineering practices, design details, international codes and standards, procedures, and specifications, including the National Electrical Code and other applicable ANSI standards. This includes:
- Thorough knowledge of electrical procedures and abilities including but not limited to, lighting, grounding, conductor sizing, conduit/cable tray fill, working space, egress requirements, volt drop, Arc Flash analysis, load flow analysis/studies, OCPD requirements, etc.
Knowledge/Skills
- Proficiency with PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric).
- Experience with HMI development tools (e.g., FactoryTalk, Ignition, Wonderware).
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable ANSI/UL standards.
- Ability to design and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
- Strong understanding of control system fundamentals, including sensors, actuators, relays, and VFDs.
- Experience with power system analysis tools (ETAP, SKM) and drafting software (AutoCAD, Inventor) preferred.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively across engineering disciplines and support project schedules.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
The Electrical Engineer position requires the employee to stand, walk, and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds.
