The Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer is a master of technology, possessing a broad and deep understanding of the processes, systems, tools, and techniques required to develop, construct, modify, operate, and maintain engineering designs. Acting as a technological integrator, this role bridges the gap between production and engineering fundamentals and works closely with Sales and Operations to develop products that meet specific technical needs.

Using 3D modeling software, the engineer designs and develops product drawings and manufacturing BOMs, collaborating with Procurement and Production to ensure successful manufacturing. This role also includes diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting experiments to improve product design, and using CAD tools to create technical drawings. As a mentor and technical leader, the Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer supports the development of the product design and mechanical engineering team, upholding high standards of engineering excellence.

Essential Job Duties

  • Designs mechanical and electromechanical products using advanced engineering techniques.
  • Interprets customer requirements; researches and tests materials, components, and assembly methods; and gathers input from team members.
  • Creates 3D CAD designs and manufacturing BOMs for mechanical and electromechanical systems through collaborative, principle-based design.
  • Evaluates systems by conducting research and applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials science.
  • Validates system capabilities through feasibility studies and product testing.
  • Develops and improves manufacturing processes and equipment for product fabrication, assembly, and installation.
  • Partners with Production and Manufacturing Engineering to develop assembly aids and workflows that optimize product quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Ensures system and product quality through testing protocols and validation of fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
  • Prepares detailed technical reports, summarizing test data, findings, and trends.
  • Provides ongoing technical support and guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance and repair coordination, ensuring operational readiness.

Leadership and Mentorship Responsibilities

  • Serves as a technical leader and subject matter expert for product design and mechanical engineering functions.
  • Mentors junior and mid-level engineers, technicians, and technologists.
  • Oversees project deliverables, ensuring quality and adherence to timelines.
  • Assists the Director of Engineering with resource planning, technical reviews, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation within the engineering department.
  • Leads troubleshooting efforts and provides direction on complex technical challenges.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Advanced understanding of mechanical systems, fabrication, and engineering concepts.
  • Expertise in mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, assembly, and manufacturing principles.
  • Proficient in 3D design software (e.g., SolidWorks or Inventor); familiarity with 2D CAD tools.
  • Knowledge of BOM structures, routings, PFMEA/FMEA, and root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply LEAN manufacturing principles.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team collaboration abilities.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Ability to manage pressure and shifting priorities.

Experience and Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Product Design, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years (preferably 10+) of product design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with fabrication, error-proofing, and assembly techniques.
  • Prior leadership or mentoring experience preferred.
  • PE license is preferred but not required.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

The Senior Product Design Engineer position requires employee to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
